Let me tell you what my family and friends did last Halloween. This post is in no way meant to debate the controversial to trick-or-treat or to not trick-or-treat topic. I simply want to share with the His Palette community, how I learned to be the light on October 31st of all days. Just maybe you’ll want to “Be the light!” this year as well.
Lights Off!
Okay. I’ll admit it. I’m totally a Halloween Hider. I lock the house up, good and tight. I turn out the porch light and any other exterior lighting. Thankfully, my bedroom is located near the back of the house, so I also turn out most of my interior lights too.
I retire to my bedroom with a book, a Bible study, a board game or plans to binge watch Netflix. I grab some snacks and a sugary beverage, with plans of hiding in my bedroom for the entire evening. Does this sound familiar to anyone?? All you Halloween Hiders, raise your hand. There you are! I knew I wasn’t alone.
Do Something Different
I am blessed to be friends with Pastor Timberley Gray. She is the co-pastor of The River and the owner of the Living Our Priorities blog.
Last October 31st, my daughter and I attended Miss Timberley’s Light Party. With her event, we were given the opportunity to be the light on the darkest night of the year. What a huge difference her light party was compared to hiding out on this night for so many previous years.
We are followers of Christ and called to be NOT OF THIS WORLD. To do that, we had to embrace something completely different than our usual. What Miss Timberley created with her Light Party, was a Christian RESPONSE to Halloween, versus our REACTION. Thank you, Miss Timberley!
Timberley’s Light Party
This week’s post is not my own. I felt so inspired by last year’s light party, I decided that I really wanted to share Miss Timberley’s idea with others. Her blog post, Why We Host A Light Party And How You Can Too!, not only provides great information about our Christian history and the origin of Halloween, but she also includes a free printable checklist to help get you started with your own light party.

What is a Light Party? That’s what we’re asked every year when we invite others to join us on October 31st for our Light Party.
Wait…October 31st, Halloween?
Yes. You see, we take that day as an opportunity to BE the light on the darkest day of the year.
And before I share HOW you can host a light party, it’s important that I explain WHY we do it.

Finishing Touch…
I know this post is not focused on Bible journaling. It’s the very first time I’ve posted anything like this and I understand it’s unrelated to creative worship. However, once you discover how Miss Timberley hosts one of her light parties, you will see that there is a bunch of options for creativity here.
Last year’s event blessed me beyond measure and gave me an overwhelming desire to share it with others. So for this season, in the month of October, our theme around the His Palette community is going to be light. Satan doesn’t have dibs on Halloween. And Timberley is here to tell you that God’s light beats the devil’s darkness every time.
Be blessed, my friends, and BE THE LIGHT!
